Deciding when AI actually speeds up design work

AI is used during design-related work to explore directions and assist thinking on a task, while the designer evaluates whether it is actually saving time or sending the work into an unproductive rabbit hole.

Why the human is still essential here

The designer has to decide when AI is worth using, notice when it is causing second guessing or distraction, and refocus on the real goal of the task. Time judgment, prioritization, and final direction remain human responsibilities.

Love this discussion about the weight of AI and technology Allie Serd!

Love this discussion about the weight of AI and technology Allie Serd! One thing I notice in my work and life is the false sense of progress that AI can provide and how this translates to tasks taking longer than they needed to (ironic, because isn't AI supposed to save us time?!)

Yesterday I was working on something and if I had not used AI, I probably could have been finished with the task in about an hour. But, I went down an AI rabbit hole and next thing I knew, I was second guessing things, going in different directions, and far more than an hour had passed!

The problem isn't AI though. The same can easily happen if you're doing a simple Google search, right?!

Not sure where I'm going with this comment other than to say that I am trying to be more aware of when I use AI and whether it's truly saving me time or not 😉
