Everyone’s talking about AI replacing accountants.
Everyone’s talking about AI replacing accountants.
They’re wrong.
And the people saying it usually have a few things in common — they aren’t accountants, they don’t understand the role, and they love a good clickbait headline.
I studied accounting — bachelors and masters. I’m a CPA with Big 4 and industry experience. I use AI every single day. Here’s why I’m more bullish on this profession than I’ve ever been.
1/ The shortage is real.
The number of people pursuing accounting degrees, combined with retirements and people leaving the profession, is creating a demand problem that AI isn’t going to solve. We need more accountants — not fewer.
2/ AI is a tool, not a replacement.
It’s the most powerful tool I’ve seen introduced to this profession. But it still requires human oversight, control, and review. Use it correctly and you become a 3x accountant. Ignore it and you fall behind. The difference isn’t the tool — it’s the person holding it.
3/ The Accounting Engineer is emerging.
This new identity — part accountant, part builder, part systems architect — has brought more life back into the profession than anything I’ve seen. The people stepping into this role aren’t worried about being replaced. They’re shaping what the profession looks like next.
This is the most exciting time to be an accountant. Not despite AI — because of it.
